Green Eye

Origins of Green Eyes

Green eyes are especially rare. They posses low to moderate amounts of melanin(which is what makes brown eyes brown) and probably represent the interaction of multiple mutations in the OCA2 gene and others. Recently the Mendelian recessive trait has been disproven. What we were taught in school about eye color before 2007 was not correct. The Mendelian theory stated brown eye color was dominant over blue, so a person with two brown genes or a brown and a blue gene would have brown eyes, and only two blue genes with no brown gene could make blue eyes. The study disproving the Mendelian theory was published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, and was supported with grants from Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council and the United States of America's National Cancer Institute.

Mutations in genes can cause one to have the color eyes they have, these mutations could be beneficial or non beneficial. DNA swapping goes on between chromosomes before an egg or sperm is developed. Only one pair of chromosomes is put into an egg or sperm. The recombination of genes could have happened at this stage.

Environmental factors, such as radiation, viruses, chemicals can switch eye color genes on or off. This could happen at any time before your birth, in your father or mother (even during pregnancy) and also to older generations in your family (mutations can lurk for ???). This is an area that needs further research as there are so many possibilities and eye color is not closely tracked. We know some chemicals, such as the glaucoma medication, bimatoprost can change light eyes to dark, This chemical is used in several lash lengthening cosmetic that were introduced a few years back and is now only available through prescription. Some users reported their eyes had darkened and filed lawsuits against the makers of the product.

To understand green eyes, first we have to look at blue and brown eyes. Researchers do not know if people with blue eyes shared one common ancestor, this is an ongoing argument that scientists are trying to learn. There is significant evidence that the first people had only brown eyes. A mutation most likely occured 6-10,000 years ago to spur human reproduction during a time of sparse food, epedemic, or something that was killing off massive amounts of people. Blue eyes first were seen in areas of northern latitudes where there are shorter hours of daylight, this could POSSIBLY play a big role, because blue eyes allow more vitamin d to be let in the body, thus preventing people with the traits of light skin and blue eyes to develop diseases such as rickets. Being such a rare color and representing health in these areas, brown eyed people instinctively wanted to have children with the blue eyed/light skinned people. Brown eyed people with darker skin are better equipped to handle sunny areas where there are longer daylight hours. Blue eyes carry a low amount of melanin compared to brown eyes. When you mix blue and brown eyes you might get green eyes (as above there are lots of factors denoting which eye color you will have). Only rarer are violet, which are exclusively found in the Kashmir Mountain Region, an area that is currently disputed between Pakistan and India, these are borderline albino eyes. And then finally red eyes, which is a product of the genetic condition albinism.

So that brings me to green eyes finally.

We do know for a fact that green eyes tend to appear in places where blue eyed people came into contact with brown eyed people probably a direct effect of evolution. Countries such as Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Spain, northern Africa and Brazil all have had people with green eyes for a long time. When the moors invaded Spain, green eyes appeared. All races, white, black, asian, hispanic, native american's all can have green eyes, this is perhaps what makes them so odd. Warriors in Northern Europe, including Russia invaded countries to the south and found the darker women exotic and different. They bred with them, left some behind and brought others back, thus producing green eyed children around the world.

Only about 2% of the world's population have green or hazel eyes, most of them being female.

Here are some interesting unproven traits that green eyed people are said to possess:

Green eyes are said to be magical. People with green eyes tend to have long lasting relationships. They are the most passionate. People with green eyes are said to be handsome. It also has been said green eyed people are jealous, such as the saying "green with envy". Green eyed people may have liver or other digestive problems. In a non scientific survey, green eyes are said to be a powerful aphrodisiac.

Chameleon Eyes

Many people with green eyes or light eyes also have "chameleon eyes", or eyes that change color. They fall into the amber, hazel, green, grey, blue range.

  • mood
  • weather
  • temperature
  • colors you are wearing
  • colors around you
  • lighting
  • Drastic eye color changes, especially in adults, could be a sign of an eye problem, so see your eye doctor.

Makeup for Green Eyes

Eyeshadow that makes green eyes stand out more are colors in the purple(plums, lavender, lilac)family, coppers, greens, apricot and gold.

My eyes are green with a dark green ring. They turn very light, bright green when I wear black or it's early in the morning or when I'm angry! ;) My mother has very dark brown, almost black eyes (Cherokee runs on that side) and my father has amber eyes.

i have solid green eyes which i find odd. most of my friends have eyes that have different shades or colors in them while mine are pure green all the way through. also, they dont change color often and when they do, it isnt all that noticeable

I am the same as Carolyn...my eyes are green, and my Mom's are blue, while my Dad has brown eyes. Out of the 5 kids my Mom and Dad have, 2 are blue, one is hazel, one is green (me), and only one is brown. When I cry, they turn the color of green traffic lights, which is very bright green. They were hazel until I was 6 years old, then they turned green. As a child, people would stare at my eyes, and make comments such as "I want your eyes", and they would come close to my face staring...scary to a kid, I must say!

To answer your first question, the color changes in your eyes could be from light refraction. Another reason is when the pupil size changes, the pigments in the iris compress or spread apart, changing the eye color slightly. Emotions also cause slight color changes, due to the different chemicals being released. It is also normal for eyes to get a little darker with age. If your eye color changes drastically (usually as an adult) it could be a sign to see your eye doctor (which is always recommended at any age). Secondly, there are several possibilities for inheriting green eyes with blue and gold and it can get confusing. You could have gotten genetic mutations of genes from both parents. Mutation doesn't necessarily mean it's bad, it could just mean your genetics have adapted to the enviroment(natural selection). Another possibility is recombination, this is when a sperm and/or egg is created. Genes swap around between a pair of chromosomes and then become fixed-creating that sperm or egg. Another possibility would be environmental factors, something either parent came into contact with, during their life before your birth or during your mom's pregnancy that would cause a gene to "switch" on or off causing your green eyes, good examples would be medication, viruses or radiation. This is still an area that needs research however. I will add a more in depth explanation in my hub. :)

My eyes turn grey or light green when I cry too!

Kally 5 weeks ago

I have green eyes, too, and they sometimes change their color - in bright sunlight they turn light green or even blue, in darker light they become hazel and when I cry, my eyes turn grey or light green. My mom has light brow eyes and my dad has hazel eyes. :)

To bob (above) my dad has brown eyes and my mum blue, and I have intense green eyes, so think you're a bit mistaken on the science facts...

My own eyes are a very dark green. I wear glasses and that usually deceives people into thinking that I have deep blue eyes for some reason..until I take them off. Once, I did this in front of two of my friends and they stared for a few minutes. Then they started to gush about how pretty they were and these two same people were so surprised when they witnessed me getting extremely mad. After I had cooled down enough to talk to other people, they hesitantly mentioned how a little ring of gold kind of glinted and collected around my pupil.
